Developing a sustainable change management strategy for a children’s hospice

Our Transformation Unit designed and embedded a comprehensive organisational change management strategy for a children’s hospice charity. This approach considered governance, knowledge and skills requirements, change processes and tools, and the best way to resource and sustain change within the organisation.

Background

Claire House Children’s Hospice helps seriously and terminally ill children live life to the fullest by creating meaningful experiences and restoring a sense of normality for their families. With two sites in Wirral and Liverpool, the charity provides day care, complementary therapies, clinics, play and music sessions, and counselling.

Following significant growth in staff and services, the organisation recognised the need to enhance its change management processes. To support this, they required a comprehensive, organisation-wide change strategy to ensure structured, sustainable, and well-resourced change management practices.

Action

We began with an initial discovery phase, engaging widely with staff to explore existing project management processes and tools. This phase allowed us to identify strengths, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.

Building on these insights, we developed a tailored change management approach to enhance project delivery and organisational transformation. This included:

  • A proportionate approach to change management, support, and monitoring.
  • A system for capturing and measuring project impact and success.
  • A structured yet flexible framework for project governance.

We worked closely with Claire House’s management team to ensure the strategy was fully aligned with the organisation’s culture and working practices. Through interactive workshops with staff members, we identified key priorities for the new approach, balancing governance requirements with time efficiency, creativity, and team independence.

Impact

Our collaboration resulted in a change management handbook, capturing the organisational change ethos, project management processes, and tools. This provided a clear framework for managing change effectively while maintaining the charity’s unique culture.

To ensure successful adoption, we co-developed and delivered training sessions with the internal project team. These sessions equipped senior leaders, project management champions, and staff with the skills and confidence to lead and embed change across the organisation.

Feedback

“We felt in very safe hands, on a very challenging change journey for our staff.” Kirsty Taylor | Head of Strategy and Projects | Claire House Children’s Hospice
