Our Information Governance team provided crucial support to Warrington Primary Care Community Interest Company, ensuring the completion of essential Data Privacy Impact Assessments, guiding their first successful Data Security and Protection Toolkit submission, and offering access to up-to-date IG resources. This support significantly improved the CIC’s information governance standards and compliance.

Background

Warrington Primary Care Community Interest Company (CIC) supports 26 GP practices in Warrington by providing a number of primary care and community healthcare NHS services and contracts.

The CIC asked MLCSU’s Information Governance (IG) team to resolve their outdated IG policies, Data Protection Officer and Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) responsibilities, and Data Privacy Impact Assessment (DPIA) support.

Action

The IG team provided a named Data Protection Officer to ensure accountability and key approvals were evidenced throughout their processing activities.

Other support included:

  • guidance for DSPT completion
  • IG policies
  • IG training
  • data sharing activities
  • completing Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs).

Impact

Our dedicated team of IG professionals are on hand to provide an important first point of contact for all queries and support. Warrington Primary Care CIC were able to access this support via the Information Governance Hub during business hours.

The IG team successfully supported the completion of various DPIAs. One was the urgent need to transfer ADHD records and services from two local trusts to the CIC. With the support of the IG team, this DPIA was approved and signed off by the Data Protection Officer.

When the CIC advised they would be submitting their Data Security and Protection Toolkit for the first time in 2021, the IG team quickly established regular support meetings with the CIC. These enabled them to review DSPT requirements, complete an Information Asset Register and map data flow.

As part of the service offer, Warrington Primary Care CIC were given access to MLCSU’s PrimaryPoint portal, which has a dedicated Primary Care IG support site. This gave the CIC access to up-to-date templates, policies and procedures to support with DSPT completion and ensure organisational compliance.

Feedback

“The support from the Information Governance service has been excellent… Having the assurance that the IG service is there to help and advise me is invaluable!

The service has consistently provided me with knowledgeable and considered advice and support… They were instrumental in helping me to complete my first ever DPIA.

I would also add that they are very responsive and will provide me with the time that I need – I have never felt rushed nor made to feel foolish (which I often do given my lack of understanding).”
