Discover how effective project management support helped an NHS hospital trust in the North-West save £1.5 million through their cost improvement programme (CIP). Learn about our approach, impact and key strategies for success.

Background

The goal was to support an NHS hospital trust in the North-West with their cost improvement programme (CIP) projects that had not yet been completed.

Action

We built positive working relationships with trust colleagues and project owners. Resources were allocated to each care group, including surgery, medicine, core clinical and community.

We undertook training on the CIP software and managed it to track project progress. Our team attended all relevant finance improvement programme meetings with senior trust colleagues.

We prioritised projects and identified those needing the most support. Working closely with project owners, we identified, documented and tracked milestones, coordinating with wider teams to ensure completion.

We facilitated the completion of quality impact assessments and equality impact assessments and captured risks, issues and themes for broader improvements.

Impact

During the programme, we helped the trust save approximately £1.5 million.

We quickly mobilised support for trust colleagues and ensured a consistent approach to CIP management across care groups. Communication across care groups regarding CIP was improved.

Many projects advanced from level 1 (project owner identified) to level 3 (actions planned). We helped the trust gain a better understanding of each project’s status and requirements for progression.

Delays in updating the CIP system were reduced, offering an improved real-time view of project statuses. The impact of risks and issues was understood and minimised.

We increased visibility of CIP project performance through highlight reports and identified wider opportunities for future improvements.
